The Biden-Trump election is over but feelings remain high. Donald Trump diehards believe the President’s defeat will be reversed in the courts. Experts disagree. Even members of his family are urging Trump to concede. Even so, some of my Facebook friends continue to lay out arguments about why Trump is better for the country than Joe Biden. The age difference between the two men strikes some as crucial. Biden is 76. Trump is 72.
Let’s be honest. Each man is old, though a super-ager. Biden stutters on occasion, while numerous psychiatrists believe Trump is mentally ill. A majority of voters went with the stutterer. The rest of the country chose mental illness. To demonstrate their impairment, they insist the election was rigged but offer no corroborating evidence.
One Trump enthusiast wrote on Facebook, “We need to get back to people voting at polling places. Mail ballots are too easily abused.”
Contrary to that individual’s opinion, five states have voted by mail for some time without experiencing irregularities: Oregon (1998), Washington (2011) Colorado (2013), Utah (2014), Hawaii (2020). The military has voted by mail since the Civil War, making it questionable to suggest the practice is irregular or un-American. Hanging chads or not, our election system is sound, the accomplishment of state and county officials across the country, together with countless volunteers. We owe these workers our gratitude, especially in 2020 when their service put them at risk for Covid-19.
Heedless of the danger people faced at polling places, my Facebook friend went on to outline the scenario that will follow because the election was rigged. “Biden wants to sell us out to China.”
Terrible, I agree. But I thought Trump was the person with the hidden bank account in China.
“Trump has never lost in his life.”
There’s always a first time. And what about those failed lawsuits?
Eventually, the man huffed himself into a mountain of spittle. Biden would take away everyone’s guns. Kamla Harris was a communist. All of us will be forced to wear facemasks for-ev-er!
I wondered if confronting him with logic would have an effect. If the election was rigged, why did Democrats lose House seats? Or fail to gain the Senate? Or, in a time of redistricting, lose so many state legislatures?
I decided to keep my silence. Already, my Facebook friend had stumbled over his argument to cast aspersions on both political parties. “They are bought and paid for by the same international gang of criminals who not only own our governments but also our financial, judicial, and communications systems.”
He was in a QAnon state of mind. Scrolling down the page, I sent up a prayer. “Thank God, Biden’s won!”
