Though he is unaware of his circumstances, Piranesi is a prisoner, living in a dimension other than the one of his origin. He imagines he is the caretaker of a house, battered by the sea, a place of infinite room and labyrinths. His quest, though he doesn’t realize it, is to find his way home.
