Continuing remarks from Monday’s January 2, 2017 blog. (Drawing the Red Line edition. “Not Going Back,” by Gaylynn Burroughs, Ms. Magazine pgs. 20-25.) Other woman’s programs to be affected.
Women’s Programs
Title IX – The Obama administration used Title IX to hold schools accountable for campus assaults. They reasoned such violence is a form of discrimination. The Republican Party, however, seeks to perpetuate discrimination. It continues to insist girls develop differently from boys and that girls should be taught separately from boys. In one Florida school where this philosophy is effect, males are rewarded for their good behavior by being allowed to play electronic games. Good females are given a dab of perfume behind the ear. (pg. 24.)
Violence Against Women Act — A Republican congress has repeatedly held up or underfunded this program which provides assistance to victims of domestic violence, and gives financial support to meet crime victim’s needs. (pg. 24)
The Republicans have announced they will continue to refuse to ratify The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women. The US is only one of six United Nations countries to fail to ratify the convention and the only industrial nation to do so. (pg. 25)
Republicans oppose funding for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) which works to ensures universal access to reproductive health and family planning.
Saving the Environment
Donald Trump and the Republicans see no problem. (pg. 25)
Again, to the 53% of white women, the 39% of all women and 97 million who failed to vote in the last election, I rush to crown you with laurels. You should be remembered for what you have accomplished.
