Sometimes I feel like a bat, viewing the world while hanging upside down. Let’s begin with the small absurdities: that some universities are allowing African-American students to re-segregate, allowing them to choose all black housing so they can avoid, “insensitive remarks.” (“Only in America,” The Week, September 16, 2016, pg. 6.) Or, consider the absurdity of an ISIS leader who banned Soccer in Syria because the game was played according to FIFA rules and not sharia law? (“Good Week For,” The Week, September, 16, 2016, pg. 6.)
We all know about Hillary Clinton’s emails. But where is the hue and cry over Donald Trump’s $25,000 gift to a political group linked to Florida’s Attorney General at a time when she was investigating complaints against Trump University? Or the fact that she dropped her inquiry soon after? (“US at a glance,” The Week, September 16, 2016. Pg. 7) I understand, I guess. Being investigated doesn’t mean a person has done something wrong. Had Hillary Clinton been investigated these last 40 years by Good Housekeeping, instead of her political enemies, she’d have been won their seal of approval by now.
Trump went to Mexico on a diplomatic gesture of good will, recently. Wonderful. But why did he reverse himself on every issue when he returned to the US? Now Mexico is in an uproar. Its legislature is preparing a bill to retaliate if Trump wins our election. It will allow their country to withdraw from the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. “ Signed in 1848, the treaty transferred to the U. S. the territories of Texas, California, Nevada and Utah as well as parts of New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado and Wyoming.” (Ibid pg. 8.) (Click)
Is it likely we here at home will need passports to ski in Colorado next winter? Probably not. But Mexico’s aversion to Trump is no win for us.
Common sense has fallen too far out of favor with too many, of late. That’s why I feel bat-like. For the rest of the campaign, I’m going back to sleep and hope the country will have recovered its sanity when I wake up in time to vote for Hillary.
